Emily Kotow
I have been practicing yoga since the age of 14 and instantly fell in love with it. I have been blessed with the opportunity to study with so many of the wonderful teachers in Calgary as well as abroad, including Mysore India.
When people ask me what yoga is, I say it is my life. It is not just the mat practice - that is only one place to check in with myself. Yoga is a practice for life and I will know that I truly understand yoga when I have the same positive, easy-going attitude when faced with everyday challenges, which I do on the mat each morning. I believe we have a strong connection to the material and our bodies, and the physical practice of asana allows us to transcend the basic physical and material and move a little deeper. By letting go of our limitations and embracing something we know is going to be challenging we are able to learn a lot about ourselves.
My best advice to new practitioners is to give yoga a real chance and it will change your life; even if that only means that your hamstrings get a little longer… This is challenging for all of us, even if there are those who are really good at making it look easy. Furthermore, it is humbling and beneficial to embrace something you might not be good at right away. Practice and patience is my prescription for all practitioners.
Peace
